A New Lifestyle Mantra: Putting Yourself First

Sometimes, it is in the nature of people to take care of others properly while neglecting themselves. While it is a very noble thing to do, some motivations are rooted in deep-seated fears that the persons they love will leave them if they do not devote themselves to them. If you continue putting others first, you will eventually lose yourself in the process.

This is not to say that you should be selfish – that is an entirely different thing. The point is that you should exercise self-care and self-love. It’s time that you put yourself first. Whether you are dealing with burnout or recovering from illnesses, such as anorexia and depression, here are some things that can help you:

Start saying no

Sometimes, you find yourself over-caring for others or being in tight spots because you can’t say “No!” Again, this can be caused by your fear and insecurity that they will leave you if you refuse. But that is not always the case. People who know you will understand if you refuse. You always have the freedom to refuse your friends’ invite for a catch-up session if you really need to rest. You have the option not to come with them on a trip if you’re saving up for something more important. Saying “No!” is definitely empowering.

Set your priorities

So how you can actually say “No!” without having to have lame excuses. First, you need to know your priorities. When you have them clear in your mind, it will be much easier for you to set aside time for such goals and eventually say “No!” to things that might get in the way. Prioritizing will also help you identify which of the things in your life actually matter. Just make sure that after you prioritize, you are following through diligently. It would help if you also learned how to plan your days based on your goals.

Treat yourself

Splurging can make you feel guilty at times, but you have to keep in mind that you are not always doing it. After all, a little treat does not hurt. Getting yourself things that you actually want and yearn for is actually a form of a reward, which will motivate you to do more. Want that luxurious handbag? Get it! Do you want to feel pampered? Schedule a day for a massage, pedicure, and manicure! Just make sure that you have set aside money for these things.

Listen to your body

Putting yourself obviously involved in being healthy. When it comes to this aspect, you need to learn how to listen to your body. Pay attention to the signs of stress, anxiety, and burnout. If your body cannot handle another all-nighter for a gig or part-time job, you can always decline. Eat healthy food, get the right amount of sleep, and visit your doctor regularly.

You are always loved!

As someone who loves taking care of others, you must learn how to take care of yourself, too. Think of putting yourself first as a pat on the back, knowing that you deserve all the good things in life.
