Holidays at Home: What to Do While Travel Restrictions Are in Place

It’s out with the old and in with the new as 2021 draws near, especially if you’re used to taking a vacation around this time of the year. COVID-19 put a damper on everyone’s vacation plans but that doesn’t make this year any less enjoyable than previous years. There’s still a lot you can do other than travel.

It might be time to prepare for a staycation or a house party. You could dust off your outdoor patio living space, fire up the barbeque and mix refreshing summer drinks for your nearest and dearest. Now’s a great time to spend time with the people who are closest to you, while the rest of the world is closed off.

Take a look at the different ways you can enjoy this season without travelling internationally.

Host a BBQ Party with Caution

Sometimes, you get so caught up in plans of travelling around the world that you forget just how relaxing your own backyard is. And since 2020 is the year of staying at home, you might as well take it one step further. Instead of going out and jet-setting, why not make your home this year’s holiday destination?

You can go for a Hawaii-themed BBQ if you were supposed to visit Oahu or Maui this year. Fire up the grill, mix some drinks, serve some poke and pop open some bottles of beer — like a true tropical party.

Before inviting people over, however, take note of government restrictions regarding gatherings at a private property. It’s better to be safe so everyone can head home healthy.

Invite Friends Over for a Night In

Bummed that you and your friends aren’t going on an annual holiday trip because of the pandemic? Well, you don’t have to fly out of the country to have fun together. You won’t have the chance to explore Disneyworld, the streets of Tokyo, and the food and wine culture of New Zealand, but it’s fine.

It doesn’t matter where you are if you’re in good company. You could pull an all-nighter in the basement, trying to finish all 15 seasons of the show you’re all invested in. Or you could teach each other your favorite recipes in the kitchen. Or you can simply have a relaxing DIY spa night.

Whatever you choose to do, it will feel like a holiday as long as you’re with your nearest and dearest.

Explore Your Bigger Backyard

Finally, keep in mind that international trips aren’t the only holidays you can take. Why not look at your bigger backyard and discover what your city has to offer? You might think that you know all the go-to restaurants and pubs like the back of your hand. But who knows? There might be something new.

Or, if you miss the feeling of exploring all day and going back to your hotel dead tired, check out the parks and hiking trails near your city. They might not seem like they’re anything out of the ordinary, but something might just surprise you.
